What I can tell you about my background is that I love nursing. I love everything about it and have built a career from it! I love taking care of people and helping them get better. I’ve worked throughout the hospital, from the emergency room, gastroenterology lab and patient education. I understand that patients are feeling confused, scared and anxious when they first learn of an illness or enter the hospital. At Truly Yours RN, I’m committed to helping you navigate the complex medical system and get the best medical care. I’ll work with you as long as you need me. As your nurse patient advocate and care manager, you can rest assured that I’ll advocate for you “with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth, and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems” (from the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics).

I will focus on trying to keep you safe and feeling supported while in the hospital:

  • Safe. I’ll help you know what questions to ask so you can be an integral part of the decisions. And I’ll be sure you know your patient rights and understand informed consent before every procedure or surgery. We will discuss safeguards that protect you from infections or mistakes.
  • Supported. At Truly Yours RN, I want you to focus on healing and let me advocate on your behalf and teach you how to advocate for yourself to get the best medical outcome possible. I want you to feel supported in your decisions and that your voice is heard.

Nurses love to take care of and advocate on the behalf of their patients. In fact, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has patient advocacy as part of the Code of Ethics: “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health and safety of the patient.”  This is the foundation on which I’ve built my business, and it’s my promise to you to do my best as your nurse patient advocate and to honor the code and you!

I would like to share with you the reason I am so passionate about healthcare advocacy, patient rights and your safety. As I’ve mentioned before, there’s a Johns Hopkins University study where they suggested that medical errors are the third-leading cause of death within the U.S., resulting in over 250,000 deaths in the U.S. yearly. I learned first-hand that this startling statistic is true.

I’ve always leaned on my faith in God—even when things didn’t go the way I imagined. I can’t know His plan or ways, but however difficult, I do accept His will. My family would need God’s strength and compassion for what was to come.

You see, my sister Sharyl suddenly passed away from a misdiagnosis. She was only 50 at the time, and she was living in another state. When the correct medical issue was discovered, it was too late. She was gone within hours, we were devastated. I wish I could have been her personal patient advocate. She would still be here today enjoying her life and family.

This senseless error has spurred my passion to use my nursing expertise in becoming a patient advocate for others. My sister deserved an advocate like this, someone who would help her receive the correct diagnosis and life-saving treatment. It is from my sister’s loss that my business, Truly Yours RN Patient Advocates, was birthed. I now dedicate the services I provide to Sharyl, in her memory.

  • Gain a clear understanding of your diagnosis. I research your diagnosis using evidence-based literature and explain it to you in layman’s terms. I’ll provide you with treatment options, so you are empowered to make the best medical decision for you.
  • Make informed decisions. Being fully informed about your diagnosis, treatment and care plan will allow you to remain an integral partner in your healthcare decisions.
  • Empower you. I’ll oversee your ER visit, hospital stay or surgery, and I’ll help to empower you through knowledge and education to receive the best care.

I’ll treat you like family, and I’ll be relentless in pursuit of the best care for you. Together, we will put your healthcare first and be sure your voice is heard.
